CrutchVerse Something to Lean On

CrutchVerse: Something to Lean On · Day 5 of 7

Not Your Armor

“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.”

Ephesians 6:10 (KJV)

David walked onto that field with a giant in front of him and a nation behind him holding its breath. Goliath stood armored, trained, and built for war. David wasn’t. Saul tried to fix that—offering him armor that looked right, felt safer, and made sense for the moment. But David couldn’t move in it. It wasn’t made for him, and it wasn’t where his confidence was. So he took it off—not because he wanted less protection, but because he trusted a different kind. He stepped forward not in his own strength, but in the strength of the God who had already proven Himself with the lion and the bear. What looked like vulnerability was actually clarity. He knew exactly where his strength came from.

David wasn’t unarmored—he just wasn’t wearing anything made by man. What everyone else trusted, he refused. What everyone else thought he needed, he laid aside. He stood in the God who had already proven Himself, and that was his armor. That’s where most of us are off without realizing it. We think if it looks right, feels strong, or makes sense, it must be what we need. So we put on control, preparation, pressure— anything that helps us feel ready. But when the moment comes, it doesn’t hold. Because it’s still us. Paul doesn’t say, “be strong.” He says, “be strong in the Lord.” That means if you’re not standing in Him, it won’t matter what you’ve put on—you’ll still be exposed where it matters most.

David didn’t win because he found the right equipment—he stood in what he already knew was true. The difference wasn’t what he wore, but where he stood. That’s the shift this verse demands. The issue isn’t the size of what’s in front of you—it’s the source of what you’re standing in. When you stand in yourself, you will always feel exposed. But when you stand in the Lord, you are covered in a strength that isn’t your own. The fight doesn’t shrink—but you are no longer exposed to it the same way.

Lean On This · What It Means to Put On Christ

You don’t face what’s in front of you with what you can carry— you face it with who you’re standing in. If it’s not Christ, you’re uncovered.

When You Don't Lean

Mindset

You believe strength is something you have to build before you can face what’s in front of you. If you can just think clearer, plan better, or hold it together long enough, you’ll be ready. But underneath that is a lack of trust.

Behavior

You start putting on your own armor—overthinking, controlling, trying to prepare for every outcome. You carry the weight, rehearse the problem, and try to stay ahead of what might happen. But when the moment comes, it doesn’t hold.

Relationship

When you live this way, you show up to others from pressure instead of peace. You become short, guarded, or distant because you’re carrying more than you were meant to. Instead of being present, you’re preoccupied—and people feel the weight.

When You Do Lean

Mindset

You begin to see that the issue isn’t your strength—it’s where you’ve been standing. You stop trying to become strong enough and start trusting the One who already is. Instead of asking if you’re ready, you anchor yourself in Him.

Behavior

You slow down before reacting. Instead of adding pressure, you acknowledge God in the moment and move forward from that place. You don’t try to control everything—you respond with a steadiness that isn’t coming from you.

Relationship

You start showing up differently. There’s less tension in you, which means less tension around you. You’re more present, more patient, and more grounded—not because life got easier, but because you’re no longer carrying it alone.

Lean Challenge

Mindset

Notice where you feel the most pressure right now. Ask yourself honestly: “Am I standing in myself, or in Him?”

Behavior

When that pressure shows up, don’t add another layer of control. Pause and say: “Lord, I’m not standing in myself here.” Then move forward without picking that weight back up.

Relationship

In one interaction today, choose to be fully present instead of preoccupied. Let go of what you’re carrying long enough to actually see and respond to the person in front of you.
